O2 Spa, Novotel
Introduction: We were approached by the O2 group to renovate their existing spa in a star hotel, introduce shower rooms to their existing massage rooms (which were only 4 in number) and give the space a face lift.
Concept: We came up with a layout oriented diagonally which not only gave the space its twist but also, importantly, accommodated seven therapy rooms with attached showers as opposed to four which existed. The visitor is made to walk through a narrow corridor with its suspended bamboo ceiling giving it the intimacy in scale and the oriental touch.
All one is made to see along the entire stretch of 35′ is the sound of the circulating water and the green wall with all its shades of plants along it.
The salon area is located away from the spa so as to ensure the noise from the hair dryer, etc., does not interfere with the calmness achieved in the spa.
Materials used: The flooring material in black and grey leather finish kuddapah, with its undulations gives the space the feel of a structure that has aged gracefully.
The walls with their texture have been accentuated with cost effective, yet imposing artefacts, such as paper fans and fibre moulded sculptures.
The entire length of the corridor has a suspended bamboo ceiling with each opening into a therapy room treated differently. The interior of the therapy rooms, in accordance with the plan in its form have interesting angles in each of their walls. Barring the rich texture and the sparring use of artefacts, the rooms with their variable lighting and the music from the speakers have a Zen feel to them.
The salon area, in contrast with the spa, has been treated with a lot of shimmer, glamour and bling. The walls have been panelled with bevelled mirror and the sequenced fabric with a rich chandelier. The mirrors placed and fixed at an angle are at attempts to make the space look larger.
Lighting: The idea was to keep the space with minimum lighting and take the visitor through a corridor with the sound of water and the visuals of a green wall with the calmness of Buddha on the front. The pedi spa area has been located almost at the entrance of the spa and is brightly lit with a view to the swimming pool.
Challenge: The spa which was originally done up with stone had a charm to it. However, we felt that the spa needed to engage all the senses of a person walking in. The visual and the tactile should be to participate in the process, and to be able to attempt that in an operational five star hotel turned our biggest challenge.
Look & Feel: The fragrance of the mandara along with the chants of music against the sound of water from the fountains in the water bodies gives the space a serene feel. The high for us is the feedback that there is complete disbelief amidst people who have visited the place before renovation. “It’s more of a relocation
