What makes up a genius is beyond the realm of ordinary. The statement most definitely stands true when we talk about one of the most successful & celebrated architects of today’s time – Zaha Hadid. It was as though Zaha was on a mission to build the most fascinating buildings and leave it for the world. It shocked us all with the sudden demise of Zaha last year – a great loss for the architecture world. This article was first printed in Aug 2013 issue of Surfaces Reporter Magazine.
We refrain from calling her a women architect for the fear of confining her work into a limited space. In her own words, she says, “I used to not like being called a woman architect: I’m an architect, not just a woman architect, But I see the incredible amount of need from other women for reassurance that it could be done, so I don’t mind that at all.”
Often known for her signature parametric structures, fluidic designs, she has consistently stunned the world with her amazing work. Her buildings are distinctively futuristic, characterized by the powerful, curving forms of her elongated structures with multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry. Its research in new in new engineering that allows her adventurous new shapes.
Much of Zaha’s work implies a different sort of speed, the slow passing of millennia, the gradual attrition of wind; the grind of the sea on stones, the way rain turns chalk into pinnacles and spires – with a scent of erosion, of future fragmentation. Her work creates a solid form which perceives spaces as it morphs and changes while we pass through different perspectives.
