Design as a Social Tool to Bring Change
B. Shweta, founder of Vistaar Associates shared her experiences on ‘Design as a Social Tool to Bring Change’.
“The course of our design practice under the banner of Vistaar Associates has led us to search for a vocabulary that can be best described as Indian sustainable interiors. But the process of building within gated communities and plush homes has also brought to light the stark disparity of the quality of spaces within gated communities vs. the outside,” says Shweta. She pondered, “So can we as designers break these walls and encompass the design of streets and lanes right outside our sites, in the public domain?”
“We embarked on a journey with the students of architecture under the name Meri Galli Meri Shaan (my street, my pride) with the idea of training them for work while educating them for life”, she said.
“To sensitise the young designers to the need for giving back to the society, MGMS under the able administration of
Ms Anuradha Iyengar, an ex IT professional turned environmental lobbyist, has created a platform to express creativity with a giant sense of purpose” she revealed.
“One of the most satisfying tasks undertaken by the team was to transform a decrepit school building for underprivileged children into a visually appealing, easily identifiable edifice for the students and cleaning the area around with the students themselves as volunteers,” she added.
Vistaar believes that design is not for the affluent only. In fact, the right to aesthetics is a fundamental right. Vistaar and MGMS are proud to be initiators of social change.
